Synopsis

Loop Guru represent England's finest strain of ethno-ambient electronica. Led by a quasimystical twosome known only as Salman Gita and Ja Muud, Loop Guru illuminate a seductive East-meets-West approach toward sonorously sampled psychedelia. While there's been much ethno-electronic experimentation in music, Loop Guru have defined this art for many years. Gathered from their early recordings (the audiocassette-only releases of Catalogue of Desires, volumes 1 and 2), this collection integrates tablas and chants with sitars, guitars, and electronics. Using programmed percussionists, Muud and Gita create a thick, dreamlike atmosphere filled with meditative resonance. Synthesized drumbeats mingle with bamboo flutes and morph into a contemplative tone poem replete with chirping birds. Understated, otherworldly, and sonically evocative, this is another fine edition of Loop Guru's distinctive sound. --Mitch Myers

CD Reviews

Ambient to the nth degree

"My first Loop Guru CD was Loop Bites Dog, and I thought it was phenomenal! At first listen, I didn't like this CD much. There are really no "songs"; the tracks are more like what the liner notes term "imaginary soundtracks". Each track is merged with the next so they are linked together into an hour long journey of sorts. You can almost imagine a movie (a wierd movie) playing out against it. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this.I listen to this CD to relax or when I want to be quiet. The music(?) affects me the way some people say new-age music affects them, but I hate new age music and this stuff doesn't sound at all like that. It's an evocative mix of world music, muted trance, sampled effects, loops, and meditation music. This is goa that you can't dance to, but your imagination will dance to it.Definitely not for everyone. If it is for you, though, you'll be REALLY glad you bought it!"
Some good tracks but overall it is only 52 minutes long

"I am a Loop Guru fan and have waited long for a new album to come out. When I first listened to this, I was a little disapointed but on a second and third listening it got a lot better. Overall it is missing a direction that most of the others seem to have. Since this is a remix of a previous release I hope that they are working on new material for another release soon."

"Listening to the Guru is like eating new & strange food. You might not like it at first but then you find yourself wanting it again because it was different. This is real ambient since you really don't pay attention to enjoy it. It just takes you. You put it away & then later you want to hear it again...like eating cilantro."
