"A juvenile favourite from the 1940s, Lolita Torres (1930-2002) always retained her beautiful voice, as well as the affection and respect of the people of Argentina. She began singing almost exclusively a nostalgic Spanish repertoire which Spanish Civil War exiles simply ate up. She then widened her choices to almost anything that suited her: tango, chanson [in translation], Argentine country, Latin pop. But she would always give one of her old castanet favourites, to the melting delight of her real, hard-core fans.
In this CD, that Special Number is the famous La violetera, which she sings like nobody else: wit, tenderness, grace, a luscious singing line. It is worth the price of the whole album. The rest of the CD ranges quite widely, and it is all good. I loved this disk. It almost made me cry.
