Synopsis

When the Clancy name is spoken, one can't help but think of the robust harmonies and good-fellowship of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, the popular vocal group that spearheaded the Irish music boom of the late '50s and '60s. This collection of tracks by Liam Clancy, however, is more reflective than rowdy; if the Clancy clan made music for drinkin' and rebellin', Liam on his own indulged a more sensitive side. Irish Troubadour consists of 14 tracks cut for the singer's 1965 solo debut fleshed out with nine selections cut at the same time but relegated for decades to the vaults. Liam, who Bob Dylan once dubbed "the best ballad singer I ever heard" is in fine form throughout, essaying the likes of "I'm a Freeborn Man," "Blackwater Side," and "Dirty Old Town" with his pure tenor and minimal instrumental accompaniment. --Steven Stolder

CD Reviews

First 15 tracks are repeats of the Vanguard album
03/23/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"As a long time Clancy Brothers fan, it is always good to see something new. But you should know before you buy this one, the first 15 tracks are a reissue of the 1965 Vanguard Liam Clancy album. But to have them plus 9 others all on one disk is still worth the price."
Pure, sweet and true -- Irish folk at its best

"Just Liam's pure, lightly-brogish vocal and an acoustic guitar. Folk music doesn't get much better than this. True, more than half the album has been out on CD for awhile, but any true music fan will know this and gladly trade in the old one to get the 7 never-before-released tracks. Clancy was at his peak at this time (1963, I think) and it's definitely worth owning."

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Liam Clancy is at his best on this CD where his style is that of a ballad singer. His voice and words are so clear. He reminds me of the clarity of Richard Dyer-Bennet. Although many of these songs are found on other albums the style of a single voice and an acoustic guitar gives them a new sound."
