Ciccolini Away from Satie
Michael B. Richman | Portland, Maine USA | 07/10/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To classical music collectors, pianist Aldo Ciccolini is synonymous with Satie. Therefore, the most refreshing aspect of this volume in the 2CD "Les Rarissimes" series, is hearing this performer excel in something other than the Gymnopedies! And while the second disc showcases a variety of superbly performed solo piano works ranging from romantic composers Chopin and Grieg, to obscure Russians Arensky, Borodin and Kabalevsky, to modernists Prokofiev and Stravinsky, it is the Concertos on disc one that steal the show for this reviewer. I could not find specific track information on Amazon (or any webiste) for this set, so I was truly delighted when I opened my bubble envelope to discover that the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 featured here were conducted by one of my all-time favorite conductors, Constantin Silvestri! In fact, it is the first time they have been released on CD, and while they aren't the greatest renditions ever (or in the best sound), I will savor them as I thought there weren't any Silvestri studio recordings left for me to uncover. In all, this is a great two-fer, if you love Silvestri, or just want to hear a master musician like Ciccolini in a broader repertoire."
