CD Reviews

Solid Les Brown
12/02/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of the best "unauthorized" recordings I've ever heard. The sound is superior; even the soloists are heard. The band itself lacks Ray Sims, Jack Sperling, and a few other Brown regulars, but the substitutes are very good. The selections vary nicely. Joann Greer was not having one of her better Doris Day days. There are a few errors by the musicians; one hard-worked trumpet player gives out completely on the last note of the album. Still, this is 69 minutes of one of the best of the big bands. And it can swing. Check out the arrangement of Apple Valley! Buy it."
Best early stereo big band recording I've heard !

"The swinging Les Brown Band was at a musical peak when these tracks were recorded. Two errors were caught: The drummer was listed as Lloyd Morales, the actual drunner on the date was Bob Neel. The fifth track title is listed as LOVE THAT SHADE OF BLUE. It is actually TAKE BACK YOUR MINK which Les recorded for Capitol in 1956. A superb recording by the most underated big band of all time!"
