CD Reviews

Flawless!!!
flave1 | San Francisco, CA United States | 04/18/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is hands down the very best recording of the Tchaikovsky I have ever heard. Every time I start the cd, I have to listen all the way through. Kogan's tone, style, technique, and interpretive passion are unmatched. I feel like I've rediscovered this concerto every time I hear him play it. After listing to this recording, all other recordings seem to be missing something. I even catch myself listening to the recording of the Lalo in its entirety, even though I have detested that monotonous piece since 7th grade. The Beethoven, Brahms, and Serenade Mencholique recordings are also fantastic. This recording should be on every musician's shelf. I'd give it ten stars, if that were an option!"
Five stars

"This may be the only Kogan's stereo issue with the beautiful sound. If you are Kogan's fan, this CD is for you. I just take one comparation, Kogan and Oistrakh in Tchaikovsky'c concerto. I've heard parallely this concerto by both, Kogan and Oistrakh, and couldn't say which one is better for long time. Then, I fugure out that the sound by Kogan has something like a magic, maybe more gentle, more transparent, or more ambitious. I have five issues of Kogan's Tchaikovsky concerto, (Melodya, EMI's Tchaikovsky concertos, Yedang...) and this is the best CD among them."
Outstanding performances at a bargain price

"This is a CD I cannot recommend enthusiastically enough. Leonid Kogan was one of the outstanding violinst of our century. Especially Kogan's inter- preation of the Brahms violin concerto is in a league of its own. His violin playing is robust and utterly sublime at the same time. This disc is a "must have" and, at this bargain price, an absolute snip."
