Synopsis

Album Description
Arguably, the most heartwarming moment of the 2001 concert film The Original Kings of Comedy arrives when comedian Steve Harvey, expounding on the joys of '70s R&B in a hip hop world, signals the concert sound man, who begins to play snippets of old-school love songs. When the Lenny Williams' classic "Cause I Love You" comes up - particularly the part where Lenny, in an anguished, drama-filled soliloquy, declares his undying love for his woman - the audience goes absolutely crazy, and Harvey's point, that old school soul is the music you turn to when you want the real deal, is valiantly made. But then, for more than two decades, singer/songwriter Lenny Williams has diligently - distinctively - made that point. As disposable pop music trends and the one-hit-wonders they manifest come and go, Williams, first as lead singer of the legendary band Tower of Power and then as a solo artist, has done his own thing with dedication, consistence and a whole lotta heart.

CD Reviews

"cause I love you is still the best...classic soul"
J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 07/21/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Would consider, when asked "WHAT IS HIP?...Lenny Williams...he can groove, smooth soul ballads and get down with the blues...as lead singer with Tower of Power in the early '70s...his approach to a song has all the passion he can muster..."CAUSE I LOVE YOU", is a fine example (the song he became identified with) from his "Spark of Love" album..."DOING THE LOOP DE LOOP, single version...is "pure groove"...can't sit still...I'm about it arrangements...remember his "Choosing You" album from the late '70s, featuring "PROBLEM SOLVER" a Williams & David Stallings tune..."I'VE BEEN AWAY FROM LOVE TOO LONG", "LOOK UP WITH YOUR WIND", "SHOO DOO FU FU OOH!" and "CHOOSING YOU" are the stand outs, a personal favorite of mine...but the highlight has to be ~ "DON'T CHANGE HORSES IN THE MIDDLE OF A STREAM", has "get-it-on-down" beat with a funky sound that keeps you movin' with every note...Hip-O keeps their ongoing series "Ultimate Collection" striving for perfection...and this CD is strickly "down with it!"Total Time: 79:55 on 16 Tracks ~ Hip-O 314-556-132-2 ~ (2001)"
