CD ReviewsMbalax without fluff 07/26/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Anyone familiar with Senegalese "mbalax" via superartists such as Youssou N'Dour, but who has only heard those albums mixed for foreign markets, is in for a delightful surprise. The ubiquitous synthesized "marimba" and other keyboard parts are right out front. From the opening track on, Tapha Faye's work is outstanding. Likewise, the sabar and other African percussion are up in the mix with the lead guitars ("Afro-rock"?). One recalls the virtuosity and precision of the legendary Senegalese group, Xalam (Xarit, Gorée, Apartheid). The call and response segments between voice, brass, and percussion in "Atterissage Forcé" ("Crash Landing") should have anyone marveling with a smile, even without understanding the Wolof language.
I listen and re-listen to this one, and never tire. Too bad the dozen or so other recordings by Lemzo Diamono Group are not available on CD, too! This is urban mbalax the way it should be; NO added fluff or syrup." |
