CD Reviews

Le saxophone Francais
William Gowers | Louisville, KY United States | 10/18/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I think maybe Amazon's title for this product is incorrect. The correct title is "le saxophone Francais". I took the liberty to upload a couple of images of the front and back covers of the CD.

This is a really impressive collection of pieces in the classic French saxophone tradition.

The first CD consists of music for alto saxophone and piano performed by Jean-Marie Londeix. The highlight of the selections (for me) was the Paul Creston Sonata. This CD contained 73.32 minutes of music!

The second CD consists of saxophone quartet music performed by the Deffayet Saxophone Quartet. This is truly amazing quartet music. The above review is correct...close your eyes and it sounds like a string quartet at times. This CD contains 74.16 minutes of music!

The third CD contains music for alto saxophone with piano and orchestra. The first half of the CD are selections performed by Jean-Marie Londeix, the second half are selections performed by Marcel Mule. The highlight of this CD (for me) were the selections by Marcel Mule. This CD contains 77.40 minutes of music.

It is really too bad that Amazon didn't bother to list the selections and give sound samples of the selections.

If you are in to legitimate saxophone my advice is to buy these CD's now!!!!"
Essential for Saxophonists

"This is definitely a compilation that saxophonists and students of Classical saxophone will want to own.

Disc 1 features works for alto and piano and a few chamber works performed by Jean-Marie Londeix, the renowned performer and teacher.

As Amazon hasn't provided repertoire, here goes:

Sauguet - Sonatine bucolique

Absil - Sonate

Creston - Sonata

Jolivet - Fantaisie-Impromptu

Charpentier - Gavambodi II

Koechlin - Epitaphe de Jean Harlow (for flute, alto sax and piano)

Tomasi - Printemps (for wind quintet + alto sax)

Nin - Le chant de veilleur (for mezzo-soprano voice, alto sax and piano)

Villa-Lobos - Sextour mystique (for flute, oboe, alto sax, guitar, celesta and harp)

Disc 2 features the Daniel Deffayet Quartet performing standard French repertoire. Deffayet's soprano playing is strong and supple, but it becomes strident too often and overpowers his colleagues. There are better performances of much of this repertoire (eg. Aurelia Quartet), but, nevertheless, saxophonists may be curious about the playing of one of the more famous French saxophonists.

Pierne - Introduction et variations sur un ronde populaire

Desenclos - Quatour

Rivier - Grave et presto

Schmitt - Quatour

Dubois - Quatour

Francaix - Petit quatour

Vellones - Valse chromatique

Vellones - Cavaliers andalous

Vellones - Les dauphins

Disc 3 has a mix of non-French works, pieces with orchestra and some light-hearted transcriptions. The first few works, performed by Londeix, are less successful. I've never found him to be particularly good playing more 'modern' repertoire (it aint so modern anymore!). His recording (found on numerous other CDs) of the Debussy Rapsodie with Jean Martinon is here and so is a gem of a performance of the Ibert Concertino da camera by Marcel Mule (the 1939 Gaubert recording, not the later one with Manuel Rosenthal conducting). The rest of the disc is filled out with 'bon-bons' performed by Mule which are (for me at least) more of nostalgic and historic value than musical (though Mule's musicianship is of course spot on). As should be expected, the sound quality for the Mule recordings (all from the 1930s) is scratchy and ranges from poor to okay. Luckily, the Ibert recording is quite listenable.

Hindemith - Sonate

Beck - Nocturne

Denisov - Sonate

Noda - Improvisation I

Debussy - Rapsodie (all above, Londeix)

Ibert - Concertino da camera

Pierne - Canzonetta

Foret - Patres

Kreisler - La Precieuse

Kreisler - Schon Rosmarin

Gabriel-Marie - La Cinquantaine

Rimsky-Korsakov - Chanson hindoue

Dvorak - Humoresque

Combelle - Variations sur Malborough (all above, Mule)

As a 'historical document' for saxophonists, this disc gets 5 stars from me. But the performances vary and much of the repertoire is dated, so that brings it down to 4. It remains, however, a collection that Classical saxophone enthusiasts will want to own."
Great CDs with Great prices

"I recently bought the CD and i was stunned by the artistry of Jean-Marie Londeix and also, the CONTROL of Mr. Deffayet's soprano playing. Deffayet's quartet is the best i've heard and it blends beautifully. They even sound like a string quartet sometimes, and that's why deffayet was the professor at paris conservatory. Londeix was in Bourdeu and he introduced people from America, japan... everywhere in the world to study with him. Londeix and Deffayet dont really get along but both of them respect and enjoy each other's playing. Oh! also, Marcel mule, father of saxophone, plays brilliantly. But, i still think Londeix playing is the best! I recently bought "the master of the modern saxophone" a book wrote by his student, james Umble. It not only imrproved my playing; It also disciplined my life. This CD and the book are both must buys for saxophone players(classical mostly. Buy it and you will be pleased with it!"
