"Recorded for Clef/Verve in 1955, 4 tracks are by a quintet featuring Brown along with Sam 'the Man' Taylor (ts) Leroy Lovett (p) Lloyd Trotman (b) and Louie Bellson (d); the rest are by a nonet including Ernie Royal, Al Cohn, Danny Bank, Hank Jones, and others. Many of the tunes here are done slowly (in fact, only two, "Just one of those things" and "Blues for Duke" really swing hard), and Brown's clarion tone is heard to full effect. "Down the street, round the corner blues" by the quintet is especially noteworthy. Besides an LP recorded for Impulse in 1965, this was Brown's only other album under his own leadership. It's a real beauty."
