CD Reviews

Beyond words
F. H. Payne | Chicago, IL United States | 07/20/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm too excited right now to research it but I'm guessing that this guy's stuff was recently reissued. I stumbled onto this CD when it came out in 94 or 95 and bought it solely because it looked cool and I was into computer animation at the time and wanted to show my nerdy friends that I had a CD called "Render". This CD blew my mind the second I put it in the player. How Many Angels was the first song I had ever heard with such savage jungle beats. Part of the beauty is the amazing diversity found here. For what could have easily been a blip and bleep fest track after track (and still sounded good), this guy covers a lot of ground. Autechre may have pioneered this kind of sound but I can't think of another recording that makes IDM (or whatever the hell you want to call it) sound so beautiful. Every single second is thought out and you never feel like some stupid loop is being played endlessly until you want to scream. Front 242's Up Evil is the only other thing that comes close to capturing the feeling of complete transport to another dimension. Granted it may not stack up to Aphex Twin and anything else in the last few years but at the time it was unsurpassed."
