CD Reviews

Gosh dangit, this is beautiful
Mark McCue | Denver | 05/22/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You don't even have to look at the box to know what orchestra this is--you'd know that gleaming string sound anywhere. And it's all in service of two great masters. The Rochester ensemble has a reputation for being idiomatic and adaptable...and here it could just as well be in Brno or Ostrava
after a lunch of roast goose with liver dumplings. The maestro has gone to the effort to get just a bit of gut on string attacks that adds that typical "Slavic" sound that brings along the whirling rythms and furiant melody. The Lachian Dances are major Janacek, too often in the past shoved in as filler by record producers and afterthoughts by maestri. Here they are showcased and the cumulative effect is hypnotic. The Dvorak is also major for the composer for the same aesthetic reasons, full of that sweet bouquet that the Master just couldn't help imbuing in his generous nature and compositions. In addition to all this, this exceptional disk makes you want to sit in the storied Eastman Theatre and slather your world-weary consciousness with the symphonic splendors that spill forth in it every season. The Rochester Philharmonic is a national treasure. And this disk is a persuasive document of it."
An Excellent Recording of Czech Music
Charles Crawford | St. Albans, WV United States | 12/06/2001

"The recording is excellent of both the Lachian Dances and the Suite in A.
The unidentified bonus track is Dvorak's Festival March, Op. 54. The RPO responded very quickly to my inquiry.I recommend this disc."
A wonderfull tour to Czech folk music.
CAHANA JOEL | Haifa , Israel | 06/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Czech musicians have always considered themselves folk and nature admirers and Czech music is usually full of joy and love of the human spirit. This CD is no exception and you should immediately enter this atmosphere. Janacek knew to combine his tallant for musical novelties with folk tradition and Lachian dances is a smashing success. Dvorak tried to pledge loyalty in his late years to his new American home who welcomed his music generously .Suite 98 nicknamed "American" is a tribute to his hosts but yet retains the Slavonic origin . This CD is really "nonesuch" by the perfect performance of Rochester Symphony directed by David Zinman in his early venues as orchestre manager. I love the idea of a "Bonus Track" ,but should it be still anonymous ? Good music performance in a budget price. This kind of CD's are rare phenomenon and can stand for the high spirit which the producers treated it's creation."
