The Amazing Sisters

"Katia & Marielle Lebeque know what they do. They have the fire of their latin origin and the knowledge of the instrument. But most of all, they deliver their performance with class. El amor brujo is perfect, Albeniz's Suite espanola and Suite Iberia, and Infante's Danses andalouses are a lesson of style. And Lecuona rises to the level of a true classic in their hands. Katia's articulation is well known as well as Marielle's respect for the details. Here, those qualities are at its best. Iam Cuban, borned of Spanish parents and raised in Andalucía and Havana. Take my advice: Buy this CD!"
LABEQUE SISTERS ON COVER OF CD WORTH PRICE

"Katie & Marielle Lebeque do Falla, Albeniz, Lecuona, and Infante with French precision. I especially liked Falla's El amor brujo, Albeniz's Suite espanola and Suite Iberia, and Infante's Danses andalouses. The piano duo do justice to Iberian music. Ritual Fire Dance has had imitators not as good."
Possibly the Labeque's Best Album?

"This now deleted concert by the Labeques of duo piano music from Spain's Golden Age can now be found on the large set Piano Fantasy Piano Fantasy: Music for Two Pianos

These performances are sensational - the Labeques never did anything better, and every one is excellent, played with great rythmic energy and a fine sense of Spanish style. I was worried two pianos might overwhelm in such showy bravura selections, but unlike Gladrags,Gladrags where the attack of two ragtime pianos rattling off fortes can be a bit drony, the Spanish music never falls into such an effect. Many of the selections display a wise sense for the sound of two pianos playing together; many sections incorporate reasonable balances and doublings, and over-loud sections are rare. The quieter selections, there are a few, move gently and easily, without fuss or mannerisms. Take a listen to the samples! I have a lot of Spanish piano music, and this CD is one of my all time favorites!

Recently the Labeques started their own label, and have recorded Ravel.

Maurice Ravel There are two identical CD issues - go for this one, which has samples you can audition AND a lower price! The Spanish influenced pieces, such as Rhapsodie Espagnol, are remarkable in their inner details and the sisters play not only with their trademark elan, verve and class, but also a great deal of passion and imagination. This album and the one above suggest they enjoy a remarkable rapport and empathy with Spanish music."
