Synopsis

Album Description
After Mexico achieved independence from Spain, many of its artists looked to other countries and cultures for inspiration. Composers Gustavo Campa and Ricardo Castro both graduated from Mexico?s Conservatory in 1883 and were attracted to the modern spirit of France. Both of them wrote numerous art songs in the French style of the mélodie, and the great French master Massenet even singled Campa out for praise. Long lost in the oblivion of dusty music archives, these songs have now caught the attention of adventuresome performers seeking to recover some of the multicultural heritage of Mexico, a kaleidoscope where Aztec, Spanish, Italian, French and Arabic traditions have met and mixed to create a new identity.
