Recorded live in concert, this 1938 Ninth is similar in most respects to Mengelberg's better known 1940 counterpart. Purists, of course, will take issue with the Dutch maestro's italicizing and gearshifts, which sometimes border on the ludicrous, such as the immense ritard at the work's conclusion. Yet such manipulations stem from Mengelberg's genuine immersion in the score, to say nothing of his intense commitment in every bar. And what an orchestra! --Jed Distler
