CD Reviews

Classic in the making!!
Unitedminds Unitedminds | New York, NY | 04/04/2005

"Truly a masterpiece! Kuku's music is sooo soulful. The melodies are elegant and the lyrics are thoughtful! Kuku's approach, which strips music down to its basics, is refreshing. The tracks are built around acoustic guitar, bass, and bongos, with occasional sprinkling of a flute, organ, or piano. Definitely not overproduced. JUST Right! The CD starts with "Love," that sounds like a fresh ocean breeze at sunrise. It continues with sensual "Sunrise in Bed," and energetic "Overwishing." Then come encouraging and uplifting "It's alright to sing so blue" and playful and catchy "Call it Whatever." The arabic-influenced "Lifer or One Nighter" makes you want to flow into the night.

This is a great CD! Kuku's accented vocals are strong and melodious. His 5-octave range is amazing. Would have never thought that he did the backgrounds on "sunrise in Bed" himself.

Great CD. Pick it up today!! Can't wait until the full album, "Unexpected Pleasures.""
Ode to originality

"This CD is amazing! Especially in a time when it is so easy for artists to get airplay with watered-down, thoughtless, junk, it is refreshing to hear music from a brother that is proud to showcase his multilayered music. He has every reason to be proud, too . . . each track is distinctly hot! I loved the Nigerian influence in the music, the uncluttered lyrics that beg you to consider their meaning and force you to respond, and the great music that goes beyond the typical instruments and explores new sounds. The range used in the songs is great too - check out the first track, "Love," and tell me you don't agree! I give this CD my highest recommendation and encourage you to check it out. I don't know if I can pick a favorite song, but ladies, watch out for "Sunrise in Bed" . . . it could get you in trouble! (same way you have to beware of Marvin G., Teddy P., Donny H., or my personal weakness, Prince!) Also, I think "Overdreaming" is the perfect song to listen to on Monday morning when you're trying to set the tone for your week and make sure that it's positive!"
