Synopsis

Album Description
The cantatas of Vol. 20 combine the concluding items from the "Picander" year of 1728-29 with a series of cantatas from the first half of the 1730s. A special feature is inclusion of a hitherto unknown sacred work from Bach?s Weimar period, now assigned the BWV number 1127. The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with The Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. This is the latest volume in the acclaimed re-packaging of the complete Bach Cantata Series on Challenge Classics. Includes 84-page booklet with extensive documentation and complete texts of the cantatas in German, English and French. Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach?s most impressive opus. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world, with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Born in Zwolle, Holland in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Koopman?s extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian, and was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series continues to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world?s leading experts on the music of Bach.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This disc is my first trying to listen Koopmann's Bach cantata, althought I ever had listenned Gardiner, Suzuki. Besides, the songs in this aren't so popular to bach's cantatas.

Finally, I must say that I am not disappointed in its performance, whatever music, signer and recording. Koopmann shows great harmony balance between vocal and instrument music, it wasn't found clear in others.

If i really want to pick holes in it, maybe there are a little weak in tenors's voice range. However, in sum it doesn't reduce the beauty of bach's cantata.

Of course, I should worry to prepare more money to put Koopmann in my collection."
