Synopsis

Amazon.com
For this release, composer and keyboardist Kevin Kendle conjures eight instrumental songs dedicated to different Flowers. His piano playing is always understated and serene, and he likes to color his songs with oboe, flute, and harp. Some of these relaxing compositions openly embrace New Age platitudes. Others are more memorable, notably the shimmering "Jasmine" and the graceful "Sunflowers," both tunes filled with gentling rippling harp and ambient keyboards, the latter unexpectedly ending with an uplifting crescendo. Likewise, "Winter Jasmine" closes the album in a trance-inducing mode that recalls vintage Hearts of Space music. While Flowers maintains a consistent flow throughout its hourlong running time, Kendle could have taken more chances, but he occasionally transcends convention to produce pleasingly peaceful instrumentals. --Bryan Reesman

"Because of hearing a cut from this album on Spinner.com, I took a chance and bought it hoping that the rest of the cuts would be as great as the one I heard. I was blown away by "Flowers" - the relatively benign title to an album that has more depth to it than what one might be led to believe. I have a home office and this album is on constantly ... all day - and its been over a year since I purchased it! I've now dubbed it for listening in the car and have it on mini-disc player so I can listen while working in, pardon, the garden! The ease of melody and instrumentation, the smooth, unobtrusive rhythms, the accessibility of the line, all make it perfect for background sound or actual listening. I have been transported more than once as phrases of the music reminds me of a places or feelings, launching me into a great space and time! I can't emphasize enough how beautiful this album is - like a great recipe that you want to indulge in over and over again. Thank you Kevin Kendle for making the day easier!"

"Flowers is a beautiful piece of work. Thanks to a satellite music channel, I was made aware of Kevin Kendle's talent. "Sunflowers"--from this album--was the composition that grabbed my attention; I have never heard anything like it. Not only am I interested in music that pleases me, but I am also attracted to music that is distinctive and that I can feel a personal connection to. Kendle's music fits that bill. A word that I can use to characterize Flowers is pure--this is a word that I also use to describe classical music. Other words to describe this remarkable album are ethereal, natural, floating, serene, rich, relaxing, therapeutic, and gentle. Flowers was released in 2001, and eight tracks are contained. These pieces contain no vocals and minimal percussion. I find every one of the compositions to be gratifying and have no favorites. In addition, the album's sound quality is nice. The disc is just over 61 minutes. Flowers is one of my favorite albums, and I recommend it."
