Midnight in a Hotel...... No Drag!
Beezum | The First Coast, Fla. | 06/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Kenny Roby is a song-writer who is so good, it's scarey. I wonder if he knows just how fun the songs on this CD are to listen to. Although Kenny was the major force behind his previous band, 6-String Drag, Mercury's Blues is ALL Kenny Roby. "Book of Time" and "In a Dress" are examples of the great lyrics and also are the kind of songs that you never get tired of hearing. The sound is unique and Roby's voice stands out - big time! It's the one similarity in most people's first assessment of the tunes. He uses a slew of musical instuments as well and they all sound good. At times he sounds like modern day version of "The Band". Ray Duffey (Drummer from 6-String Drag) provides most percussion and Ex V-roy, Scott Miller lends a musical hand as well. This latest effort is musically strong and lyrically stronger. Humor abounds in tracts like "Why Can't I Be You" and throughout. I hate to say "Americana", but I think that's what this is. It's still R&R to me. Enjoy! A true shame that no radio stations would ever play Mercury's Blues.(At least not in my little corner of the world!) Do yourself a favor: boycott today's poor radio choices and enjoy yourself at the same time. Bill Monroe would be proud."
Kenny's Got the Goods

"I was fortunate enough to experience 6 String Drag live several times before their unfortunate break-up. If you can find a copy of their last disc "High Hat", get it. Roby's first solo effort, Mercury's Blues, is a welcome consolation prize to the loss of 6 String Drag. The songwriting is just as solid with the same knack for lyrical storytelling that you'll soon be singing along to. Word has it there's more on the way. Keep up the good work Kenny."
