"When the Europeans speak of complete recordings, complete sessions they mean in regard to one record label. This then is the complete United Artist recordings of Kenny Dorham with Jackie McLean. Actually they did another one for Blue Note but the LP was cancelled. Later in the CD era it was released as part of the mediocre VERTIGO CD.---- As for the sessions at hand, which have more character to them, the first, MATADOR is a studio session while INTA SOMETHIN' was recorded live at the Jazz Workshop in Calif. I keep coming back to the live set. There are two McLean quartet features and one for Kenny. San Francisco Beat has a set closing quality about it, but when these guys start soloing you don't want them to stop."
