Synopsis

Album Description
No One You Know, the 2000 debut CD from Northern California based Canadian songwriter Kenny Butterill has been described as a soothing, melodic blend of alt-country, Americana and Folk that conjures up lots of easily identifiable feelings and imagery. Comfortable music that feels good. The CD ?offers up a dozen songs with material that ranges from no-nonsense love ballads to topical songs that tackle political issues from an individual perspective?. In addition to some impressive chart performance abroad for the CD, the release of No One You Know CD yielded two singles - How Far Can We Go? and Balsam Lake - each being included on important Americana/Alt-Country Sampler CDs. How Far Can We Go? was included on Songlines' first Americana New Music Compilation, a CD utilized by public and commercial radio stations in the USA as part of listener appreciation programs. The CD featured Americana legends like Emmy Lou Harris, Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore amongst others. And Balsam Lake (which reached #29 in the European Media Services Country charts in 2001) was on the first AFIM Americana CD ?Get Your Kicks? that included icons like Doc Watson, Jerry Reed, and many others. With descriptions from "great driving music for the open road" to "totally mellow makeout music", Kenny Butterill's No One You Know is a CD that appeals to a broad range of listeners.

CD Reviews

Kenny Butterill - A great artist emerging for the first time
Steve Ekblad | Chicago, il | 04/30/2003

"Remember the thrill you got when you first listened to JJ Cale's or Mark Knopfler's music? You were taken by the songs and transported to a different place. Stories in their songs were emphasized by their voices as clear as someone speaking the story yet melodic. Combine the effortless but engaging instrumentation and you were hooked. Get ready, Kenny Butterill has arrived. From the first track to the last--that feeling is back! This Canadian raised musician is a wonderful singer songwriter. He prefers not to play live shows and is much more comfortable writing than traveling to perform. Thanks to his brand new CD, "No One You Know", he is now someone you can hear and enjoy. Kenny sings the vocals on this CD while adding acoustic rhythm guitar. He is joined by Peter Morrison on guitar, mandolin [2 songs], and bass with Daoud Shaw on drums and percussion [Daoud also engineered and co-produced this CD] and a few other guests. The songs are very memorable and well recorded and I plan to listen again and again. Say Kenny, how about one tour to Chicago--please? If live shows are out, how can you find fault with a musician who has "Thanks For Listening" next to his photo under the CD storage tray in the CD's jewel box? You can visit Kenny's site at [website] and read more about this talented Canadian artist. Meanwhile, order up a copy and enjoy a wonderful treat.--Steve Ekblad - [website]"

"If you like music that has a great beat and earthy lyrics - this is a great CD. The first six songs are definitely driving music on par with Townes Van Zant and JJ Cale. The artist has a rich, earthy voice and the guitar/mandelin playing is awesome."
