(5 out of 5 stars)
"I really love this CD! Nikita Storojev has a beautiful, earthy and robust voice with plenty of personality and charisma (not to mention wonderful sense of humour in more comical songs). And what an incredibly imaginative accompaniment he gets from David Ashkenazy! He makes this CD very, very special. His arrangements of these songs are done with exquisite taste and care, and his playing has so much sparkle and fire. This CD is worth listening even just to hear David Ashkenazy alone, but coupled with such a fine bass as Nikita Storojev, it is really a treat!"
Fine collection of russian romances and folk songs
(4 out of 5 stars)
"This CD offers both superb piano playing by David Ashkenazy and beautiful, solid and expressive rendering of popular russian songs by the russian bass Nikita Storojev. Storojevs voice is sonorous, rich and deep and goes, at its best, right to the core of the "russianness" of the songs. Ashkenazy's piano works are both inventive and technically brilliant, and the two performers fill out each other very nicely. The only negative remarks that may be made, are the somewhat stereotype and standardized rendering of a few of the songs, but that does not really count all that much. I recommend this record to anyone interested in russian vocal music."
