Synopsis

Album Description

ECM debut for unique Brooklyn based singer/composer/keyboardist Judith Berkson, an artist of great potential. Entirely solo, Berkson performs her own idiosyncratic songs and instrumentals, plus jazz standards (Cole Porter's "All Of You", George & Ira Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away From Me"), "Der Leiermann" from Schuberts Winterreise, Jewish cantorial music (the riveting "Ahavas Oylam") and Yiddish folk song. It is a strong and striking performance from a charismatic singer. Like other ECM singers (Meredith Monk, Annette Peacock, Susanne Abbuehl), Berkson truly shapes her own universe. In fact the title of her album Oylam means: "World, universe, creation, reality, realm."

Outstanding, literally

"I somehow had little expectations from the 'line-up', but after listening once or twice there were two tracks that hit me so hard that I had to listen closely for another 20 rounds; the result is most outstanding, each song is very good, I give a light minus to the CD as a whole, 'cos it is kinda blended, but if you want to find yourself in front of a great jazz, but far from jazz, jewish church experience then this will totally do. Organ, piano, voice and Tora ! not to forget easily. A + to Manfred for publishing this material.

PS The guy that wants to give his copy for free should direct it to me, thank you so much, a special product as this is should never be abbandoned where it doesn't belong"
