Synopsis

Album Description
Josef Myslive?ek, although still little-known outside the Czech Republic, was one of the chief architects of the `high' classical style that emerged in Europe in the late eighteenth century. In 1770, he met fourteen-year-old Wolfgang Mozart, who was much influenced by Myslive?ek's Italianate style--an aspect of Mozart's music that scholars have consistently overlooked. The works on this CD, composed in Italy in the mid-1760s, are performed here as string symphonies following an option specified in the original print.

Essential Item for Collectors of Chamber Music Recordings
Music Lover | USA | 01/24/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Devotees of 18th-century chamber music will be delighted to find in this selection another premiere recording of neglected masterworks by Mozart's friend Josef Myslivecek. This one is particularly welcome, since it contains the earliest string quintets with two viola parts ever published. The pieces are exquisitely charming, so their interest to music lovers should extend far beyond their historical importance. As the liner notes say, they have a character very similar to Mozart's divertimentos for strings. They are perfect for casual listening, full of interesting melodic ideas that enhance the soothing effect of the sound of the string ensemble."
