Cash gets back to his roots
A. Christy | 03/07/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)
"The premise of Songs of Our Soil is simple - Johnny Cash is singing a collection of old American folk songs, peppered with self-penned numbers in the same style. Don't let the odd paisley-clad Cash on the album cover deter you from buying this; it's a fine album, and an interesting example of an early Cash concept album. Notable tracks include "My Grandfather's Clock" (a traditional classic performed in the true Cash style), "The Man on the Hill," (a Cash original, capturing the sprit of the sharecropper's attitude towards his boss), and "Drink to Me," (a reworking of the traditional "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes, a song that had special significance to Johnny). This album may be seen as a precursor to the more recent American recordings - it is an effort made by Cash to capture the songs that meant so much to him, and started him on the path towards his illustrious musical career. Listening to this album grants some insight into Johnny's roots, and where he felt his musical loyalties lay."
