OUTSTANDING SOLO PROJECT BY GUITARIST EXTRAORDINAIRE
08/13/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD not only showcases the impeccable guitar virtuoso and strengths John Jorgenson is known for but also expands on his talent as a gifted songwriter with a fine ear for melody and arrangement, as well as his proficient vocals on seven of the tracks. There's plenty of guitar extravaganza for the guitar lovers including three instrumentals: two riveting rockers and one challenging acoustic number that expounds on John's skill. The rest consists of pop/rock vocals, heavy on straight-ahead, no-nonsense, rockin' out conviction that speaks of the rocker at heart Jorgenson truly is. He emotes on vocals on the edgy "Too Heavy For You", sinking his teeth even deeper with the bite of passionate guitar leads. He especially dazzles with some gyspy-jazz guitar soloing set to a rock formula on the enlightening "Let It Go", then softens the mood with vulnerable introspection on the ballad "Black and Blue". He not only proves what a success he is as a solo artist but also as a multi-instrumentalist by playing just about every instrument on this CD as well. (8/12/99)"
A strong ensemble of wonderful music

"John Jorgenson in his latest Solo project brings you to another place in Emotional Savant. This CD which is full of great hit's such as Off My Back and To Tomorrow get you turning up the sound. At the same time, ballads like Black and Blue spiritually talk to you in a way modern music has forgotten. Overall, an excellent CD."
Plesant Listening

"'Emotional Savant' showcases John Jorgenson's musical diversity as a solo artist. It has a very pleasant mixture of instrumental tunes and those with vocals. Most of the songs feature the guitar but in one in particular, 'Black and Blue', John plays the piano with some mushy, romantic type lyrics. 'Jig in D', one of my favorites, is an uplifting melody, basically a fiddle tune played on guitar, no lyrics to mess it up.

I like this CD because I enjoy John's style of playing and arranging his songs. He does play most of the instruments himself which is impressive. I have to say though that his singing voice is unremarkable at best and I laughed out loud the first time I heard him sing(I'm just being honest here). Some of his lyrics are good with almost a spiritual quality to them while others just don't have that punch that you would expect from someone who was truly an emotional savant.

He always plays a mean guitar though and that makes this a good purchuse for any fan of Mr. Jorgenson.
