This is beautiful
L. Guilar | 12/16/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you've never heard Dowland's lute pieces (rather than his songs) or if your idea of Lute music is based on the extended works of someone like Weiss, then this collection will probably come as a pleasant suprise. Unlike a lot of later lute music, most of these pieces are short, energetic, melodic and very enjoyable to listen to. If you compare Dowland with his peers, (say the elder Johnston) you can see why he had the reputation he did. Given that this is the "complete works" there are a number of pieces that don't live up to the standards of the best, but the whole collection is remarkably good and a remarkable tribute to Dowland's abilities. They are beautifully played. If you compare some of the more well known pieces with versions by other performers Lindberg comes out on top. His playing is delicate when it needs to be and energetic when the dance forms call for it. He is precise and clear and a pleasure to listen to. And if you've ever tried playing these pieces, on Lute or Guitar, having good versions of Dowland's complete(?) repetoire is a bonus. There is over four hours of magic here."
