No Better Introduction to the Great One
07/05/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An eclectic collection of all the "greatest hits" from his magnicent Impulse years, regarded as his peak period. Just look at the track listings...there are few key compositions missing, and for a concentrated listening experience of deep, deep musicality, this is your fruitcake. It's gonna take you a decade to absorb. Enjoy."
Great compilation of "accessible" part of impulse years

"This record contains some of Coltrane's most beautiful work, such as Alabama, Dear Lord, After the Rain, Naima (live), and works exceedingly well as a one-disc collection of the Impulse years. I have over 20 Coltrane cd's, and I still find myself pulling out this one as much as any. It is worth getting, especially since it can be had for ... . If you wish to get someone a 'Trane record, this is a good one to start with."
A Beauty Supreme

"Being a blues guitarist who at the age of 27 is starting to feel the irresistable pull of jazz and the sonic tapestries available, I thought this album would be a great education for me, and hopefully an intense listen. I am playing it right now and all I can say is I am very grateful I stumbled upon it. 'Trane is such an amazing soloist. His phrasing is impeccable. Ask yourself when you listen to him "Is there any possible way what he plays could be improved or sound better? To me his playing is simply perfection. This collection is a "greatest hits" from his early 60's recordings. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed."
