CD Reviews

Might As Well JUMP...and buy this CD

"Growing up, I was heavily influenced by the once great hard rock band Van Halen. Singer David Lee Roth was like a god to me. I read that he had been very influenced by early Jolson records when he was a child, so I ran out and bought this CD in order to get a taste of the roots. I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, Al Jolson's music sounds nothing like Diamond Dave, but the style and spirit are the same. This is a very neat collection. I love all the songs, especially the classic 'Swanee'. You can get a real feeling of a different time and place listening to this record. I think you'll enjoy this. Buy it today."

"First I would like to mention that I currently follow over one hundred pianist. Since I have so many pianist that I follow I have decided to compile a top five list. I am most happy to announce that John is on my top five list. Bravo John! Now for the news about this cd. There some high points about this project. John choose a well recognized repertoire. How could someone not know most of the hits of say, an Al jolson.John had his piano well tuned for this cd and it showed. He played these tunes with percision. I don't think Johns' basic sound ever sounded better. There was a down side to some of these performances offered here. I don't want to be a party pooper, but I felt like John carried his improvisional skills much too far. On some of the songs he started the song with an eleven bar improvison. On other songs he played a long improvision on the bridge. This to me took a lot away from the song.I must confess that i'm an engineer and with my production software I was able to correct the things I didn't like about these performances. I have made these songs sound the way I felt like they should have sounded in the very beginning. No offense John, but I felt like you needed my help with your arrangements.I think it would be alright to ask piano lovers to buy this cd."
