CD Reviews

Diverse, Forgotten, Laid-back Night Music
James J. Lundy Jr. | Charleston, SC United States | 05/24/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love this album. Unlike some blues CDs there isn't a sameness to the songs. They all sound different. There's a wonderful laziness to the songs as well. Most of the lines don't rhyme, the instrumental solos are of the back-porch-on-a-hot-and-humid- July-night variety. "Morning Glory" is a highlight but there isn't a weak song in the bunch. The recording quality is great but the pace of the songs suggests that maybe this wasn't intended for release. There's a demo quality to the effort. And a correction to the Amazon listing: the songs were recorded in one session in 1974 but the release date was 1983, again suggesting this wasn't intended for release. The song for growing up is a (almost 11 minute!) walk down memory lane for Big Joe and I find it fascinating every time I hear it."

"I can't get enough of Morning Glories. Some good jazz. One of my favorites. I used to go see the guy play live in Los Angeles!"
