"Joe Newman (tp) Frank Wess (ts) Tommy Flanagan (p) Eddie Jones (b) Oliver Jackson (d) 5/4/60. (Swingville)

This is a great straight-ahead jazz album with 5 musicians doing exactly what they know how to do best: swing. There is a wonderful consistency to the playing here, whether the tune is slow like the 12-bar blues WEDNESDAY'S BLUES or up tempo like the other blues on the CD, CUEIN' THE BLUES. Flanagan is especially good here. And the all-important rhythm section is solid. A most worthwhile date."
First -rate mainstream swing.

"It isn't often you get a group of musicians together for a record date where everything jells and the musicians just seem to be made for each other. Well, this is one of those rare dates. Joe Newman has always been one of my favorite trumpet players. Along with Frank Wess and this superb rhythm section, he can do no wrong.Tommy Flanagan is just a marvelous accompanist and soloist and Eddie Jones provides a rock solid swinging bass. I particularly enjoy the drumming of Oliver Jackson whose sound and tasteful accents really give this quintet a lift. My favorite of the well-selected tracks is "Cuein' The Blues." This CD along with Budd Johnson's "Let's Swing" were two of the best Prestige Swingville recordings."
