Confirmation - Canyon Lady *****

"Out of fairness and apologia, I'm just reporting back on this record. It has lived up to all of my expectations, and numbers among my favorite records, not just for Joe Henderson, but for my entire jazz collection, which numbers somewhere around 300 or so items. This definitely falls into the 'late fusion' category, but like other of Joe's work of this period, it capitalizes on funk and spanish rhythms, as opposed to electronic obscuritanism or plain jazz iconoclasm. As a casual student of '70's blaxploitation films, I'll even swear that I heard some of this music in a Fred Williamson film, or something of that ilk. But it is by no means 'sell-out' film music - it is both studied, and accomplished, especially for such a large ensemble. Just trust me on this one, you won't be disappointed."

"I bought this cut on vinly back in the 70's and I loved it right away. If you like well orchestrated music ala Miles Davis/Gil Evans you will love this CD. There is so much warmth and mellowness to Joe's playing. If you you have any of Joe Henderson's "cuts" in your collection then this is a "must". Of course this was recorded during the period that all Jazz artist were going "electric" and this music may have been dismissed but "purist", another "cut" during this period was "IF YOU'RE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM". This was a live recording at the LIGHTHOUSE, and it seems not to be in release by anybody right now. McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins And Joe Henderson were all on The Fantasy labels MILESTONE or CONTEMPORARY and most of the music they recorded for the labels is less than memorable, but "CANYON LADY"is a must if you Love Joe Henderson. Oscar Brashear Plays a mean trumpet solo TRES PALABRAS ". Get this cut while it is in realease !"

"I am not long on wordsmithing about an artist history or comparisons to others, the music sells itself. This record is a great piece of work by Joe and his supporting cast. It fits in nicely with other great records of his, "Multiples" and "Elements". I would reccommend this piece to everyone who is a jazz or Joe Henderson fan."
