African Dub Chapter Two
Stuart Jefferson | San Diego,Ca | 06/14/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Approximately 37 min. Remasterd sound. This is the second in a series of releases from the 17 North Parade label. Like the first, this set pays dues to Randy's Record Mart(and studio),which was important in Jamaica in the 1960's and 1970's. The sound on these tracks is about as good as they can be-everything is separated and clean. The musicians on these tracks consist primarily of Joe Gibbs group, which in reality are members of Soul Syndicate and Lloyd Parks group. Other well-known names crop up like Sly Dunbar and Tommy McCook and Dean Fraser. This set was mixed by the great but relatively unknown Errol Thompson. Thompson should be as well-known as Lee Perry and other producers and mixers of the time.

The original songs range from groups like The Melodians to The Wailers,to an unidentified cut. As all dub music, the original tunes are stripped of their vocals and remixed in the studio, sometimes not even resembling the original. This is why dub music continues to have so many fans all over the world. Take a goog song, strip it down, and add a few effects to get "that" sound.

The actual era of true dub music lasted a relatively short time. The music on this album was made in the era when dub was very popular in the dancehalls and wherever people gathered to have a good time. It's a fine continuation in this series, and anyone who likes authentic dub will like this."
