Synopsis

Product Description
Hip Hop, if nothing else, is about place. As the great American folk music of today, Hip Hop conveys space and location like nothing else, able to capture the spirit and history and experiences of a neighborhood and all its residents in the form of rhythm and rhyme. That's why rappers hold it down for their blocks. That's why they shout-out their area codes. Why they put on for their cities, for their homes. Jimmy Powers is the "travelling man" evolution of the rapper, a vagabond transplanted from Boston to San Diego and everywhere in-between. His debut solo album, Cali-Foreigner, is a culmination of his worldly experiences, experiences that have seen him establish a name as the frontman of Hip Hop trio, Clay Pigeons; perform with an array of respected Hip Hop veterans from Hieroglyphics to Sean Price to Strong Arm Steady and even Canibus; and last year, become nominated as a finalist for the San Diego Music Awards' 'Best Hip Hop' award. Jimmy Powers projects these varied experiences through a lens of humility, honesty, and blue collar work ethic on Cali-Foreigner. He forges a new home on the album, a hybrid of his East Coast roots and his West Coast state of mind. He reminisces on his past with love and respect in the heartfelt ode to his mother, "Janice Marie," and in the hit single, "Same James," in which he presents a laundry list of the strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and autobiographical moments that make him who he is. But he also looks towards his future as a battle-ready, word-bending West Coast lyricist with songs like the breakbeat-fueled "New Era News" and the trunk-ready title track, "Califoreigner." Jimmy Powers portrays the essence of the new, worldwise emcee, fusing the hip-hop of disparate regions with introspection and a nose-to-the-grindstone dedication to the craft.

Yep.... This is DOPE!!!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I gave this disk 5 or 6 good spins before writing this. First, Jimmy Powers brings it. I don't want to over hype this cause, well this isn't about hype. This is about a man doing what he loves, about making what he feels is good music and letting it be what it is. He brings variety to the table which to me is a sign of a talented writer plus someone who is true to self. We always get wrapped up in emcees being a certain way all the time, either hardcore or smooth or comical or a battle rapper. That one moment we can't love our woman and the next minute hate them!! We fail to realize that at the end of the day they are people just like you and me and that is one of Jimmy's strongest assets. Technically this album has all the tools, the production is good, the beats will get your head nodding his lyrics will make you think, laugh and hit rewind, his delivery is stellar and it is all in a neat little 12 song package, which to me is about perfect and in today's attention deficit world about as long of an LP you can have if you expect the average listener to listen from front to back. I am not going to run down a list of song by song reviews. Nothing is weak here, it runs from strong to very strong. I am pretty one demensional when it comes to the music I have listened to my whole life, its been hip hop since about 1985 and in todays world of hip hop I would say this album is better than about 90% of the hip hop you can find right now. Mainsteam or underground, signed or unsigned. This album is what a wise man once said, "is Hip Hop in it's purest form"."
