Jessica Andrews was country's top-selling debut artist of 1999--quite an accomplishment for a 15-year-old girl and a record label that hadn't done much heavy lifting in Nashville. But Heart Shaped World sells itself, and not just to the same teenage girls who initially followed LeAnn Rimes. Unlike Rimes, Andrews isn't out to top the diva list, but to communicate wholesome truths about love ("The Riverside") and loss (Benmont Tench's "Unbreakable Heart"). OK, maybe "Hungry Love" seems too backwoods gothic for a suburban teen, but its message--about the downside of sex too soon--will surely hit home with the middle-school set. Of course, nothing about Heart Shaped World is truly country, despite the faint strains of fiddle and banjo, but the production is never vulgar or over the top à la Faith Hill's Breathe, and the sweet-voiced Andrews brings a surprising maturity and knowing delivery to the material. If the new teens are intent on owning Nashville, let's hope they all do it with this kind of taste and class. --Alanna Nash

CD Reviews

A True Talent!
01/24/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jessica's debut CD is by far extraordinary! She's got one heck of a voice for such a young age. However, I did see the reviewer who compared her to other teen singers like LeAnn and Lila...why is this necessary? Can't people appreciate the talents of all these young artists? There is room for all of them to be stars! Why do people always seem to think there can't be more than one country star who are teenagers? Jessica most definitely is a star -- that's for sure. Her strong and powerful vocal range and emotion are what makes these songs stand out. I think "Unbreakable Heart" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. She does it well as she does all the rest of the songs on this album. Jess - you're truly a beautiful talent with a bright future ahead of you! Keep it up!"
WOW! What a voice!

"I am totally amazed by Jessica Andrew's voice! She's so young. I usually don't get into the "teen divas" of country music, but after hearing a couple of the songs off of her album, I knew I had to buy it. I was NOT disappointed. Her voice is absolutely amazing. It's soft, sweet, and clear. My favorite song on the album by far is Unbreakable Heart. I also love James Dean In Tennessee, You Go First, Whatever, and I Will Be There For You. I liked the rest of the songs on the CD, too! Jessica is amazing. I hope she goes far in the country music business. She seems like a very sweet girl who is appreciative of her fans and of the people who got her where she is today. Way to go, Jessica! Buy this album today! You'll love it."
Why's Britney getting all the publicity?

"Britney Spears does have a pretty good voice, but it's nothing compared with the wonderful gift this young woman has been blessed with. Her voice can alternate between sounding husky and mature (for ballads) and playful and trilly (for faster-paced songs). "I Will Be There For You" was one of the few standout tracks on the PRINCE OF EGYPT soundtrack, and she followed that one up with "You Go First" and "Unbreakable Heart." Another track on the album, "Whatever," is delightful pop-country, and perhaps my favorite song on the CD. But no matter how good her songs are, Jessica Andrews is still not getting the attention she deserves!"
