CD ReviewsFun stuff! Vickie Smith | Brooklyn, NY USA | 05/09/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "This cd is loads of fun - Great swingin' music, too!" Terrific tunes from a behind-the-scenes genius Vincent Van Gopher | 11/08/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "Jesse Stone is best known as the composer of rock 'n' roll classics such as "Shake, Rattle & Roll," "Money, Honey," "Don't Let Go" and "Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash" (using the pen name Charles Calhoun) as well as the jazz standard "Idaho." He also was a founder of Atlantic Records and the creative force behind the label's early success in R&B and rock 'n' roll. His arranging and producing skills helped shape rock 'n' roll while building the careers of Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, the Drifters, the Clovers and others (see the Jesse Stone chapter in Nick Tosches' tremendous "The Unsung Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll).
Though performing wasn't Stone's main interest, he's tremendously engaging on this collection of wonderful rock 'n' roll/R&B tunes recorded in the late '40s through mid-'50s. "I Don't Know Why the Car Won't Go" in particular shows his puckish sense of humor." |
