Synopsis

Jesse Dayton was born in Beaumont, Texas--George Jones country--cut his musical teeth in Austin, moved to Los Angeles to write for film and TV, and recorded this album in Nashville. Therefore it makes sense that his brand of traditional country music is as rich and diverse as it is. Dayton mixes in heartland rock, Tex-Mex, rockabilly, swing, country-folk, and a keen pop sensibility with his Texas-style honky-tonk shuffles and ballads. Guests ranging from singers Mandy Barnett and the Dixie Chicks to stalwart sidemen Johnny Gimble, Floyd Domino, and Flaco Jiminez add color to the proceedings along the way. Dayton's a supple guitarist with strong rockabilly roots, and one wishes he gave his guitar work a bit more room to stretch out here, but it's a minor drawback to an otherwise engaging album. --Marc Greilsamer

Sweetest Voice on the planet
12/10/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you haven't heard Jesse Dayton sing, you're missing out. And if you like to dance in a circle rather than in a straight line, get this cd. While this album was recorded in Nashville, it's real Texas country. Jesse's been around for a while, but since he's maintained his integrity and written nearly every one of his own songs, he hasn't managed to get his "big break". Yet, everyone who has heard him, knows he's better than everybody else out there on mainstream radio. His vocals have quite a big range, as do his influences. He injects a little bit of everything into his writing including blues, zydeco, dixie, tejano, rock, and especially traditional country. He's neither afraid to have fun or be serious, and you'll appreciate his respect for his audience.
Do yourself a favor and buy this album, then treat yourself to Raisin' Cain (his first) and Tall Texas Tales (the most intelligent of all three). Backed by his regular bandmates Charlie Sanders, Richie Vasquez and Brian Thomas, and featuring legendary artists like Flaco Jimenez and Johnny Gimble this is a can't miss album. My car stereo just wouldn't be the same without it."
