"Fresh Start" Is a Good Place to Start

""Fresh Start." Huh? The title implies a new beginning, or direction, or..., but "Fresh Start" is pretty much in line with what Jeri Brown did before and what she's done since - and that ain't bad.



Missouri born, Montreal based, Ms Brown has a burnished, vibrant voice with an extremely wide range, (although to my ears, she's not always in tune). She's adventurous and can scat and vocalese with the best of 'em. Sometimes her sense of drama, (she once toured Europe singing light opera), sends her over the top, but a little excess is easy to forgive when a singer can deliver the goods the way Ms Brown can.



"Fresh Start" is a collection of mostly self-penned stuff that gives Ms Brown plenty of opportunities to show off her ample vocal chops - and with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Avery Sharp on bass, and Wali Muhammad on drums, she has first-class support.



Justin Time Records has done the sonics properly. Not audiophile quality, but clear and clean.



If you're unfamiliar with Ms Brown, and enjoy contemporary, main stream jazz, "Fresh Start" is a good place to start...."
