Synopsis

Amazon.com
There have been changes in the past few years for teenage Tejano singer Jennifer Peña. She is now being billed as a solo artist (though her longtime backup band, Los Jetz, is still accompanying her), her voice is taking on a new maturity, and A.B. Quintanilla III has taken over the producing reins. The restructuring has worked to Peña's advantage on her fourth and best album, Abrazame y Besame, which should put her back on top of the Tejano scene. The sound has been refocused and evenly split between cumbias and pop numbers, making for a solid, diverse collection. Cumbias "Si Tu Te Vas," "Ya No," and "No Te Voy a Perdonar" sparkle with energy, and Peña teams up with Kumbia Kings vocalist DJ Kane for the stellar title track. Quintanilla gives Peña a soulful shimmer on pop ballads "Vuelve," "You Say," and "Por un Beso," one of the album's best cuts. He's the best thing that could have happened to Peña's career. --Joey Guerra

"Jennifer Pena's new album is the best Tejano album that I have heard recently, although it is stretching the truth to call this a Tejano album. The truth is that it is a mixture of R & B ballads (Por Un Beso, You Say, Vuelve), cumbias (Si Tu Te Vas, Abrazame y Besame, Contigo Otra Vez, etc.) and a pop-dance track (Give Me Love). Jennifer has noticeably matured as a vocalist on this album, although her voice is not displayed as prominently as on her last album, due to lots of backup singers. The abundance of background "oohs" and "ahs" shows the hand of AB Quintanilla in this production. And the album might as well be called "Jennifer y los Kumbia Kings" because nowhere on this CD is the presence of her band, Los Jetz, felt. Still the CD is a step forward for the 16-year-old Pena, and hopefully it will receive airplay on Spanish stations throughout the U.S.A. and Mexico, many of whom could use her songs to improve the tired mix that has overwhelmed Regional Mexican stations recently. Best tracks are "Si Tu Te Vas", "Abrazame y Besame," and "You Say". "Por Un Beso" and "Contigo Otra Vez" are potential hit singles as well. The lyrics to "Give Me Love" are reminiscent of Britney Spears. A word of advice to Pena - don't go there. You're a rising star, with the potential of grabbing a massive multi-generational and multi-ethnic audience. Don't go after the teeny-boppers and elementary school crowd."
