CD Reviews

This is the real deal

"From the melting pot of American rock comes this perfect blend of rock and roll that while serving up the best of classic rock, brit-pop, and what happens when punk grows up, it also sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. These eleven tracks, all inked by McKitrick, work together as a true album in the classic sense, even down to the feel of two "sides". The first half consists of upbeat rockers "Why", a countryish lament about loving someone who is no good with a surprise reference to Steve Miller's "The Joker", "title cut "Glow", a pub-rock raver complete with eastern-inspired space jam, and "So Far Gone", a paean to the struggles of living at odds with the self, which includes such lines as "sometimes I feel like a soldier/stepping up in line/steeling myself to kill or die/for something that will never be mine", and the life and love-affirming anthems "Bottomless Cup" and "Love is All you Are." The other half brings us the haunting, Dylan-esque "Angel", a suicide note in three-quarter time, a deconstruction of the Swingin' Doors 'Jaco" that brings Rolling Stones 'Black and Blue" to mind. The album ends with the joyous abandon of 'Come On Now", a sort of hippie song about the splendor of life in San Francisco. This is one of those records that you will return to year after year. Everthing in the thesaurus under the word "Glow" applies to this record and to the luster of McKitrick's talent. Listen to these songs and bask in the glow of the self you were born to be."
Keeping it on my turntable

"...I keep listening to this thing, I gotta say it grows on me and it feels like i havd been listening to it since high school. The songs are killer, my personal favorites are So Far Gone ( i got that one on the amazon free download) and then I bought the cd and I love the song Jaco, it was a way different version than the one on her other cd with the Swinging doors. This is way more like stones, tom petty, maybe a slight twang hear and there but way more rock and less country than the other one. I've been following Jen's career since the Betty's and she just keeps getting better. This is going to be one of my top 25 for life for sure. ROCK ON."
