CD Reviews

JEANNIE C. RILEY - We love you!
Jerry Kanabel (jerry@kanabel.com) | USA | 10/24/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is GREAT! Jeannie C. Riley is more than "Harper Valley P.T.A." and this CD is full of her other hits. She sure knows how to tell her stories and what a voice! We need to hear more from her. There are country music stars that everyone admires and appreciates, but Jeannie C. Riley is something more, she's the one we love!"
Can't Wait 'Til June
Lee Armstrong | Winterville, NC United States | 03/25/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Jeannie C. Riley is sometimes thought of as a one-hit wonder, known for Tom T. Hall's "Harper Valley P.T.A." that was #1 on both the country & pop charts in 1968. The guitars twang as Riley delivers the lyric, "There's Bobby Taylor sittin' there & 7 times he's asked me for a date; And Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away; And Mr. Baker, can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town?, and shouldn't Widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down." It was a blockbuster and still is full of fun almost 40 years later. Riley also had a top ten country hit with "The Girl Most Likely" that follows in Harper Valley's footsteps, "The wedding bells can't wait 'til June; It better be now or else real soon, Susie Jane is in a jam; Listen to that gun go wham wham wham." "The Rib" sounds like a feminist song with Riley's expressive delivery, "I wash your dishes, iron your shirts, and give you children; And never mind a bit except when you forget that I am flesh of your flesh & bone of your bone." "Country Girl" was another country top ten hit, "New York is a long way from Texas; Vegas is a long way from Abilene; I spent lots of my time flying out to L.A.; & if you've never been there, you don't know how lonesome big towns can be." "The Generation Gap" is a witty track, "You ain't gonna fill it up with all the lies being told." "Oh, Singer" also went top ten country for Riley and has a rustic Southern charm. "Good Enough to Be Your Wife" rounds out her top ten country hits, "If I'm good enough to be your woman, good enough to share your life, good enough to live together, good enough to have your children, good enough to give them life, I'm good enough to be your wife." This 15-track Varese Sarabande compilation focuses on her hit Plantation recordings. It is a strong "Best of" package that plays like a familiar friend. Enjoy!"
Harper Valley PTA is the "BEST".

"This is a really super CD. I remember listening to Harper Valley PTA when I was a child. It has always been a song that everyone can identify with. Especially if you are from a small town. Jeannie Riley sang all her songs with such conviction and brought across fine country singing. We need more music like that today."
