CD Reviews

Mostly Ballads (and a Blues or two)
Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 01/06/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Nice compilation, although some of the artists (Sarah Vaughan) are not caught in the jazziest of the moods (and, related to that, although there are a tad too many strings on some arrangements...). One would wish a bit more blues (although Rushing, accompanied by Clark Terry, Dicky Wells and Hank Jones is absolutely superb in "I left My Baby")

However, the assembled tallent is impressive, and among my other favorite performances is Mel Torme's "Gloomy Sunday", originally a Hungarian "suicide song", arranged and conducted by Marty Paich (quite diffent from Holiday's versions) and, of course, Billie Holiday's "Good Morning Heartache" (written by Draker, Fisher and Higginbotham) in the noble company of Charlie Shavers, Paul Quinichette, Tony Scott and others...)."
