"This album puts McDuff within a context which he seems to manage best. A brass section with two trumpets, two saxes and a trombone allow him to fit sparse but insistent playing around a range of tunes, six of which he wrote himself.Highlights are "Spec-t-tator", "From the Pulpit" and "Going to the well".A special mention too for a reworking of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" which works well. The low point is a no more than adequate version of "Going out of my head" Two further comments, the playing may seem effortless, but it's clear that as a group they understand each others playing, and enjoy it. Secondly guitarist John Hart manages to weave a suprising amount into the solo's that he gets to play."
