CD ReviewsLotsa fun Jan P. Dennis | Monument, CO USA | 01/05/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "What to make of a band that covers "Whatever Lola Wants" and "Mr. Lucky," not to mention a demented take on Charlie Parker's "Red Cross"? Well, first off, I suspect their collective tongue is buried rather deep in their collective cheek.Does it work? Yes, gloriously. To pull off this weirdness, the band must not take itself too seriously. That's kind've a given given the personnel: ex-Zappa keysman, Jamie Saft; bad-boy slide guitarist, David Tronzo; free-spirit downtown drummer, Kenny Wolleson, and J. A. Granelli, free-lance anarchist-cum-percussionist.What holds it together is Jamie Saft's sick organ. Cheese doesn't begin to describe his demented concept. Think a way hip Leon Russell meets some kind of out there Ry Cooder grove but not Buena Vista Social Club--no, some more primative, essential, maybe Tex-Mex thang--hey, Doug Sahm/Augie Meyers??--I don't know; maybe they're are no referents; Jamie, really, is da man.Add J. A. Granelli's hippie esthetic so ingrained from his old man, David Tronzo, slide guitar monster, and Downtown Kenny Wolleson at his most inspired and you've got--What?--I don't know. Garage jazz? Raw, essential jazz primativism? Whatever. It really doesn't matter.Just listen. Love Slave's where it's at, man."
