CD Reviews

One of the best choirs in America. . .
06/12/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Having heard them on tour, I knew when I bought this CD that the Northwest Girlchoir can deliver a well-polished and beautifully musical performance of many different kinds of music, and I was pleased to find that this CD is a wonderful showcase for them. Their sound is clear, focused and unaffected. Their dynamic range is wide, which is admirable, considering that this is an amazingly large children's choir. Their ability to sing as one voice, with a beautiful and consistent tone never belies the fact that there are 70-80 singers in the group. The selection of songs is lovely, and should appeal to a large range of tastes. The skill and sophistication with which the more complex music is handled is impressive; equally impressive is the rich tone and musically epressive line of thier unison singing. One real gem on the CD, my favorite track, is "Adonai Roi", a Hebrew version of the 23rd Psalm, which features smooth, well-phrased unison singing and a stunning solo. One of the nicest things about the Girlchoir is that the natural qualities of the girls' voices are obviously respected, so they lack the forced, sraight tone that so many children's choirs employ. As a result, they sound more mature, flexible and, quite frankly, more interesting than most children's choirs (or, indeed, most choirs in general). In short, this is an impressive (and obviously heart-felt) recording from a unique organization. I listen to this CD frequently, and I highly recommend it."
