Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
On their eponymous 1989 debut, the Indigo Girls followed the lead of such greats as Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers pumped social conscience and self-esteem into ringing acoustic anthems like "Closer to Fine" and "Land of Canaan," just in time to catch the rising tide of feminist rock. Occasionally rough and a little too self-conscious, the songs on this CD resound with a profound sense of honesty and raw emotion. Crisp guitar work and haunting harmonies became the stock-in-trade of this powerful duo of "girls with guitars." --L.A. Smith

CD Reviews

The Indigo Girls Are My Angels
Amanda J Schick | Lawrence, KS | 06/14/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'll never forget when I was seventeen, suffering over a heartbreak. My friend introduced my to this Cd, and the Indigo Girls, two mutli-talented ladies with a whole lotta soul, saved me. Have you ever wished that you could write down exactly how you feel about something? Well, these girls do it for you. They find the words to express the heartfelt emotions we all know. Their harmonies are perfect, and their melodies will have you singing at the top of your lungs. The Indigo Girls write all their songs. They don't need lyricists, composers, or choreographers like today's sorry excuses for musicians. If you are searching for pure musical greatness, this is where to find it. The Indigo Girls are, undoubtably, the greatest thing on Earth."
From the Heart

"Singer/Songwriters live by writing something from their hearts that touches ours. That seems easiest to do at the beginning of a career, when they're still passionate about whatever got them into music. This first major album by Indigo Girls has heart. I wish I knew the background behind the songs, but even without that, you'll find yourself thinking about what "kid fears" really are..."
