Synopsis

Album Description
Raven presents for the first time a comprehensive anthology covering the career of one of the great cult artist of American rock 'n' roll: ROY LONEY & THE PHANTOM MOVERS. A Hundred Miles an Hour 1978-1989 is an exhilarating, multi-label collection, 28 tracks and 77 minutes of red hot rock 'n' roll. With superb quality audio, detailed liner notes, color booklet. Originally lead singer with the legendary Flamin' Groovies (Supersnazz, Flamingo, Teenage Head), Roy Loney kicked off his solo career with the 'Artistic As Hell' EP (1978), boasting flat our rockers 'Don't Believe Those Lies' and 'Hundred Miles An Hour'. "Primitive rock with taste" is what the man himself called it, and it still sounds utterly contemporary. The superbly crafted Out after Dark album (1979) was semi-acoustic hard rock and rockabilly par excellence - as if Elvis and Scotty had been recorded by Jimmy Miller at Olympic rather than Sam Phillips at Sun. Celebratory anthem 'Phantom Mover' and voodoo rocker 'Used Hoodoo' are perfect examples of the genre. The killer rockabilly and gloriously R&B charged rockers continue with 'Act Of Love', 'Down The Road Apiece', 'Lana Lee', 'Ragged But Wrong' and 'Chicken Run Around'. Roy Loney is still touring (including a current reunion with Groovie Cyril Jordan). Loney is an innovator, bringing life back to some forgotten threads of rock 'n' roll. He is one of the true originals of our time.

"This is a really cool Roy Loney retrospective but it's missing some key songs. How about the incredible "Trophy" from "Out After Dark"for starters. And when is somebody gonna re-release "Contents Under Pressure". With a good remastering songs like "Heart Full of Soul" and "Last time I'll Cry"would sound great. Contrary to popular belief Roy Loney never made a clunker and all his albums deserve the full scale reissue treatment bands like The Barracudas are enjoying today."

"Roy Loney's music is right up there with Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Sam the Sham, The Pretty Things, etc., as stuff I can listen to over and over and never tire of.

Real rock done with humor and an obvious love of the music.

"I ran into Roy Loney on the bus and he told me about this release. I bought it, and it brought me back to the Palms on Polk St., and Rock City on Broadway; all the wonderful venues when San Francisco was, well, functional, with the accent on fun, art not artifice. Buy this release so that Roy can get a car and not have to ride MUNI. And send me money, too!"
