Synopsis

Product Description
EMI Classics celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the famed
Austrian composer Hugo Wolf with the release of this 8-CD
box set. This exclusive box set contains some of Hugo Wolf s
most notable works including his collections of Mörike-Lieder
and Eichendorff Leider.
Great singers have long been associated with the name of
Hugo Wolf; before World War II Walter Legge was the
inspiration behind the Hugo Wolf Society edition which
still remains a benchmark for the performance of Lieder. His
wife, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
have long been icons in the performance of Lieder and those
of Wolf in particular. In this collection they are joined by
singers of the present generation Thomas Allen, Olaf Bär,
Ian Bostridge, Dawn Upshaw, Anne Sofie von Otter,
Helen Donath, Brigitte Fassbaender and Monika
Frimmer all who have been drawn to his great collection of
songs; accompanists too, notably. Gerald Moore, Geoffrey
Parsons, Helmut Deutsch and Antonio Pappano have
been instrumental in ensuring that the music of Hugo Wolf
continues to grace the halls where great Lieder are still
performed.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is amazing how neglected Hugo Wolf remains even among professional musicians. His music, whether you like it or not, is indispensable not because of its historical value but because of its immense musical value. This set is a mix bag: it includes both relatively modern and older recordings. Personal preferences aside, the performances and sound quality are all commendable. I have listened to the set systematically more than once and I am extremely pleased. Not that I like each and every song but the ones I like I find to be among the best in their genre, sometimes the best. I prefer certain performances to others (and I prefer recordings by singers not featured in this set to some that are featured here). However, it would take a lot of money an you will end up with lots of duplicates if you start a Hugo Wolf collection from scratch. If you prefer certain cycles, songs, or artists, this set will enable you to decide whether you want to invest in other discs. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know Wolf's Lieder (which form almost his entire musical output) and one should hope that it would further his cause."
