"A SALOON SINGER IS AN ARTIST WHO NIGHTLY SITS AT A PIANO IN A BAR AND SINGS. THERES NOISE, SMOKE, GLASSES BEING DROPPED, WAITERS ASKING CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT, PEOPLE "SHUSSING"...AND THE VOICE THAT YOU CAME TO HEAR. HUGO HAD A VOICE AND STYLE THAT YOU CAME TO HEAR. HE MADE GREAT MUSIC. LIVE WAS THE WAY TO HEAR HUGO..AND THIS ALBUM TRIES TO DO CREATE WHAT HUGO DID NIGHTLY. THE CHOICE OF MATERIAL IS WHAT SHANNON SUNG AND PLAYED EVERY EVENING...AND HE DOES IT "TO A FAIRTHY WELL." "I was privileged to call Hugh Shannon my friend, and hearing his voice again after so many years made me realize what a talent he was. His genuine warmth and wit come through loud and clear on this recording - and makes one yearn for the loss of all the great saloon singers. Hugh was always generous to a fault with his friends and helped many aspiring musicians and singers along the way. He is sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to see him in person both in America and abroad - and the era he represented even more nostalgic."
