Synopsis

Album Description
HFQ's second recording is a darker follow up to the group's eponymous debut. This CD features original music, including the favorites "Dirty," "Hey Little Girl," "Molly's Pies" and an intense, exploratory rendition of the traditional "Oh Death." Clocking in at almost seventy minutes of music, the disc is a veritable catalogue of American roots styles, a starker predecessor to Dylan's latest "Love and Theft." Blues, Jazz, Country, Tango, Swing, Old-Time, Avante-Garde, Parlor Songs and Waltzes intermingle not from song to song but from moment to moment to create a rich, mysterious tapestry of sound. I LIKE YOU A LOT received four stars from THE ALL MUSIC GUIDE, charted at #3 on ROLLINGSTONE.COM's TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2001 and was featured in a lengthy profile on Terry Gross' FRESH AIR on NPR. Recorded live in the studio to all-analog tape, I LIKE YOU A LOT was a sleeper hit and has found fans all over the globe.

CD Reviews

Socratic rendition of a futuristic opera
KaTHerine Jenkins | Tallahassee, FL | 07/12/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album transcends modern musical ways of thinking. It encompasses the glimmering significance of every musical genre, becoming itself purely genreless. With the combination of a sexy trumpet dancing casually and sometimes forcefully in the foreground, an elegant violin, a femininly shaped bass, and a defeated romantic guitar player, this arrangement of ballads and blistering harmonics is a must for any jazz, folk, blues, rockabilly, or classical enthusiast. Imagine sashaying through a ballroom lit with blue, cupping a golden glass of champagne, meeting the intoxicating charismas of cowboys, and slow dancing with Django Reinhardt and you will still have no idea of the fantastical world that these songs will send your mind and body to."
As True And Unique As An Artisanal Cheese

"As individuals, we are rightly picky about our music preferences. But there is an essential quality to HFQ's music which defies traditional description. Whatever you think you might not like about HFQ -- don't. Try it. 'I Like You A Lot', and all of HFQ's music, delivers a flavor you know yet with an ingredient you can't quite name, but you just have to have more. This is real music, second only to hearing HFQ 'live'."
A Different World

"I don't know who these guys are (a friend gave me the CD for Christmas) but after a few casual listens here and there I put this disc on the other day and I can't get it off of my player! These tunes creep under your skin. I love the rootsy vibe mingled with the punky passion and realness. Now I understand my friend's need to evangalize for this band. It's the best stuff I've heard in a long time."
